Archana – Anchor’s Mama-Bear

By | Company News | No Comments

Archana is a one-woman accounts dynamo. As the only person working full-time on accounts – with occasional assistance from Andrew and Jessica – she has a crucial role at Anchor. She earned her Masters in Professional Accounting from Central Queensland University and plans to start her CPA in the next few years. Like many working mums, Archana manages to juggle her career with spending time with her 7-year-old son. Not always easy when both she and her husband work full-time. With 3 sisters and 2 brothers, family has always been an important part of Archana’s life. She’s still very close with her sisters and travelled extensively with them while she was back in India. In 2009 Archana moved with her son and husband from her native New Delhi in India…

Meet Sharif – the whiz kid with an answer for everything

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

Sharif Olorin has a reputation around the office for 3 things: his deadpan sense of humour, his numerous tattoos and piercings, and his obsession with Russian Caravan tea. So far, the best Russian Caravan he’s found is at the Glebe markets in Sydney’s Inner-West, an area he now calls home. In many ways, Sharif is stereotypical of inner-Western Sydney. He’s young, wicked-smart and tech-savvy. He doesn’t wear a suit to work and he cares more about getting the job done than whose responsibility it is. He has a lambda – the Greek letter λ often used in mathematics and science – tattooed on his right forearm, and even uses the symbol as his signature!

Hiring only the best

By | Technical | No Comments

Regular readers of this blog will know that we’re hiring – we’re always hiring, in fact, and we’re going to be talking about it more in the near future. Hiring good people is really hard, so a smart company is always ready to scoop up a great candidate when they crop up. Hiring is hard because there’s a lot of really good people out there, but not that many great people out there. The esteemed Joel Spolsky covered this at length over a decade ago in The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing, but it comes down to this: We only want the very best and can’t afford to do otherwise. Here’s why… As a webhosting company, Anchor operates in a pretty unique space. We provide a level of support that goes…

Meet Michael, (another) Linux nut!

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

Michael Sampson has a reputation for being the office Linux nut. No small feat, when you consider that everyone at Anchor is a Linux nut. He works as a Systems Admin with Chris and Ryan. How did you come to be working at Anchor? “I was attending PyCon AU in Tasmania. I saw the Anchor banner next to the food table. When I got back, I checked out their company blog. I’d never worked on high-availability stacks or a lot of the other technologies mentioned and I thought that would be fairly interesting. So I applied for a job. I’ve been here since January. What did you do before working at Anchor? I spent the last 7 years working in an IT position in the education sector in Armidale. I’m from Tamworth…

Practical and hands-on hiring for sysadmins

By | Technical | No Comments

Hiring good staff is hard. As a company that revolves around employing Very Smart People, we know this very well. (And if you’re a Very Smart Person that can get stuff done, please get in touch) Plenty of companies have written about their hiring processes and the brilliant methods (“tricks” if you will) they’ve found for picking the best candidates and sifting out the rest. They’re a great read, but we think it’s really about finding what works best for you. We think Joel has a lot of great ideas, but we ignore the bits that are specific to hiring coders. We’d like to share some new stuff that we’ve been doing, including a very practical hiring test that we’re not aware anyone else is doing. We don’t honestly know…

Jess Field – Anchor’s Superstar Customer Services Manager

By | Company News, Technical | One Comment

Jessica Field is clearly not the same as 99% of the staff at Anchor — she’s not a sysadmin, and she’s not even very geeky. One sure-fire way to get the rest of the team to laugh is to ask them “What’s World Of Warcraft?”. She still laughs about how long the answers went on for, and about all the little debates that sprung up between the WoW nerds in the office. “To be honest,” she says, “my friends and family consider me a geek, but they have no idea. Still, I guess I’m the geekiest in my circle of friends”. Jess studied a Diploma in IT out of high school in the seaside town of Forster before applying for a technical support role at Anchor in Sydney. “It was pretty…

Meet Ms Organisation: Sophie Yang

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

Sophie Yang is our new office manager and she’s busy knocking us all into shape. Sophie, you’ve only been here a couple of weeks – welcome to the team! What’s your role here at Anchor? My role here is the Office Manager. It’s my job to ensure that everything in the office is running smoothly. That can mean making sure that the staff are happy, organising supplies, events, and generally keeping the office ship shape. Do you have experience in this field, or are you just super-organised? My previous job was as office manager in a real estate office where my role was similar to what I’m doing here at Anchor. But yes, I’d have to say I’m a pretty organised person. What’s your impression of being part of the…

Lifting the lid on our wily wordsmith

By | Company News, Technical | One Comment

The tables are turned this Tuesday, as we interrogate our illustrious technical writer, Barney Desmond! Tell us about what you do at Anchor? I started in my current role as the technical documentation writer, a newly created position; I would write and edit procedures and other internal documentation for our sysadmins to work with. From that it kind of expanded to a lot more public-facing stuff. Things like case studies, support docs in our public wiki, and in fact most of the stuff in the blog. The public aspect means we get to keep our customers up to date about what we’re working on, or what new technologies we’re playing with. My job’s a really fun mix of different things. How did you get involved with Anchor? I became part…

Catching up with Anthony O’Hara

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

New kid on the block Anthony O’Hara tells us about his time so far at Anchor… And his cats. Anthony, you’re new here; when did you start? I started here only three weeks ago. Before Anchor, I was part of a tech support team for consumer/commercial comms gear, and also did some tech-writing for their product development group. I also worked for a medical finance company, managing their IT department and running their network support Australia-wide. What’s your role at Anchor? I’m working with Steven and Lachlan in the Level 2 sysadmin team. My training has just recently finished up and I’ve been working on support tickets. So what’s your impression of working here so far? It’s the perfect place for “technical people” to work. I’ve found the main focus…

Ph33r the b3ard!

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

We’re proud of our “no-dress-code” dress code at Anchor, and Steven McDonald is a case in point. His gentle South African-influenced voice issues from the midst of a thick ginger beard, long hair, and bright Hawaiian shirt, as if a younger Brian Wilson had grown up singing about the surf breaks of Durban instead of California. Like the Beach Boys’ musical prodigy, our Steven is brighter than average and a little shy. What do you do? I started here at Anchor as level 1 support. Since then I’ve been promoted to a position located somewhere between level 2 support and level 2½. Does that mean you do the work of two and a half people? No, it means there are some pretty talented sysadmins at Anchor. Our support team is…
