Anchor partners with Magento for premium ecommerce hosting

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

Anchor is proud to announce a new partnership with Magento as a hosting provider. This relationship recognises Anchor’s expertise and experience when it comes to providing comprehensive hosting solutions for Magento stores. Anchor is the first Australian hosting company to attain this partnership status, and only the eighth worldwide. Anchor’s ability to deliver high-performance and scalable Magento deployments was highlighted by their work with Games Paradise. Following the migration to Anchor’s servers, their site loaded some five times faster, and availability was rock solid, greatly improving their customers’ experience. As a company that’s been around for over ten years, Anchor has been doing managed hosting for a long time now. In that time they’ve built up strong relationships with local developers and Magento solution partners. By taking advantage of these…

Anchor Christmas Party 2012

By | Company News | No Comments

Anchor held its annual Christmas party last Friday, and in a departure from the usual it wasn’t held upon a seaworthy vessel. So while enthusiastic statements to that effect were not possible, our presence at Le Pub appealed to the Redditor in us. Le Pub is a cozy little underground establishment just a couple of blocks from Anchor HQ, so we packed up for the week and moseyed on down in no time at all. Parties are always more fun when people get a bit dressed up. To make this easier we decided to do it a bit differently this year: instead of visiting the costume shop to try and pick fun and silly outfits, we got an assortment of bits and pieces to add some pizazz. This was a…

Still standing: How Booktopia got through ClickFrenzy unscathed

By | Company News | No Comments

The brouhaha surrounding ClickFrenzy has come and gone in the last few weeks, but we’re still getting questions about Booktopia and what they did to get through the ordeal without going down. While there were a few high-profile website failures during the ClickFrenzy event, the fact is that a lot of the participating retailers suffered badly under the load, and the organisers and retailers copped a lot of ire. Booktopia was not one of them. Booktopia’s site was designed and coded in-house, with the app written to run on JBoss, backing onto a MySQL database. It runs on a cluster to ensure high availability, but you might be surprised to learn that there’s actually not a huge number of servers involved. When you have an experienced team that’s done this…

Office Highlights – New Lunch Room

By | Company News | No Comments

Due to our recently booming number of staff, we had to create more space in the office. I guess you could call it… renovation. As part of these changes, our lunch room has been demolished and a new and improved lunchroom built to replace it. Whilst our old lunchroom only had a table, a beer fridge and a few chairs, our new lunchroom is also an amazing entertainment room too! We have a brand new xbox 360 for competitive gaming during Friday lunches in the office, new lounges for relaxing, and of course two red beanbags for the finishing touch. The new Anchor lunchroom is awesome, especially on those days when we need to kick back and blow away the stress. There’s no doubt that we are all excited to…

Office Highlights – Airblades

By | Company News | No Comments

In keeping with our propensity to get things done Five Times Faster we’ve installed these shiny new Dyson Airblade hand dryers. They pride themselves on being quick – well now we can dry our hands five times faster! Actually, the real reason is environmental – we’ve always been a bit of green-minded company. Following on from our recent waste reduction and power awareness efforts, we’ve taken aim at our bathrooms. We go through a lot of paper towels, and for what? We take some sheetpulp, make it damp, then throw it out. It’s not very efficient. This is also just cool technology, that counts for something around here. Now, I wonder if anyone specialises in pimping these things out…

Weathering the ClickFrenzy Storm

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

It was touted to be the online sale to stop the nation. In reality, for most, it turned out to be the online sale which broke the Internet. At a time when bricks and mortar shops are seeing a decline in sales — this was a real opportunity to regain some ground against international competition. And for some, they did. But for many of the retailers getting in on the action – it was nothing more than an abysmal failure. It doesn’t take too much to just see how widespread the performance and reliability problems were last night; social media was quick with the complaints rampant on the #ClickFrenzy hashtag and both #ClickFrenzyFail and #ClickFail were trending. On Facebook, a group “ClickFrenzy fail” was created and quickly gathered thousands of…

Office Highlights – Beer fridge

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

Happy staff don’t grow from nothing – it’s the well balanced diet of free lunch every week, giant cakes several times a month, a variety of daily snacks, and of course, free beer, that does the job. At Anchor, we supply beer and soft drinks to quench the thirst of everyone in the office. We even have a separate beer fridge that’s refilled a couple of times a week to make sure it’s always packed up – possibly the most important job I have. Whether it’s during a lazy Friday lunch in the office or after a day of work, we like to enjoy a beer or three to kick back and relax.

Anchor teams up with Amazon Web Services to provide fully managed cloud

By | Company News | No Comments

Anchor is pleased to announce our newly-minted relationship with Amazon as a management provider. Playing to each company’s respective strengths, the relationship showcases Anchor’s unmatched management and support, coupled with the scalability and performance of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. Why Amazon? The announcement coincides with the opening of Amazon’s local presence right here in Sydney, which will provide the much-anticipated capacity and low latency that their users need. We’re big fans of the AWS model and have used it to support big customers who have very “bursty” capacity requirements. The AWS Advantage Amazon’s architecture provides systems that are flexible and suitable for use at almost any scale. Because AWS works on a usage billing model, you only pay for what you use, with no upfront commitment. As things…
