Getting ready for the Christmas rush

By | Company News | No Comments

Christmas is now less than a month away, and if you’re an Anchor customer you’re probably madly gearing up for the rush. The recent ClickFrenzy event gave everyone a taste of the excitement, and we’re quite chuffed to note that none of our customers experienced any load-related problems this time either. Booktopia, a veteran of last year’s event, was joined by Paddy Pallin, CostumeBox and Toyworld as business that came out on top by hosting with Anchor. 🙂 If you’re an online retailer, rest assured that Anchor is here to lend a hand if you need it. Our team of expert sysadmins can get your site shipshape and performing at its peak. If you’re not sure your website will cope with the rush of customers, get in touch as soon…

Anchor Movin’ On Up!

By | Company News | No Comments

Well folks, the big day is here. Our Sydney-based Anchorites spent the latter half of yesterday packing everything away to move to our new premises on Elizabeth street. The new office space is a full 168% bigger, wow! Anchor has literally moved up in the world; as of this morning we can be found at Level 23, 201 Elizabeth street, with a fabulous view over Hyde Park and the CBD. On a technical note, we’ve made some exciting upgrades to our switching infrastructure at SYD1. Half a dozen lower-capacity core switches have been replaced by shiny new Dell Powerconnect models, giving us a gigantic backbone with 10Gbps ports everywhere. This is especially valuable as deployments of DRBD, for example, become more commonplace – it’s a performance monster that benefits from…

Anchor Movin’ On Out!

By | Company News | No Comments

It’s an exciting time at Anchor as another big move is in the works. We moved to the current premises at 230 Clarence about 3 years ago now. At the time we thought it was huge and had boundless plains to share, but strong business and steady recruitment has seen us grow to about fifty staff now! The exact date for the move isn’t fixed yet, but we’re prepping for the convoy to set sail sometime in late November. The destination? A few blocks east, just across the road from Hyde Park, and a substantial jump in elevation. In the meantime we’ve been doing a bit of spring cleaning, we’re getting rid of anything that we don’t need to take with us. The amount of stuff we’ve got lying around…

A Milky Missive from our Manufactory of Mandates leaves us Mystified as to the Murky Motives of this Mischievous Mailer!

By | Company News, Technical | No Comments

My! We found ourselves Momentarily Mollified by these Magnificent Mouthfuls. Marvelous! Misaddressed? Nay! Mea culpa, the Mail was Manifestly Meant to Make its way to My Merry Mates. Most odd, the Mailer Made up their Mind to keep Mum on their identity and Mask themselves behind anonymity. Monkeyed with, our Mission of discovery was Mooted – not even a Mere Majuscule on their Materials, save for the postmark of our fair capital. No Malice in their intent, thus it Matters not. These shall Make a Mean Mocha come Morning.

RedAnt & Michelle Bridges 12WBT.com showcase tonight at Port 80

By | Company News | No Comments

Anchor is currently working alongside technical agency RedAnt to build a scalable hosting environment for Michelle Bridges 12WBT, that scales to service spikes of up to 50x regular traffic volumes. To do this, Redis has been implemented. Ben Still, Director of leading Ruby on Rails development house RedAnt, will be presenting in conjunction with the Management of 12WBT on what has enabled the incredible success of Australis’s most popular weight loss website. A major part of the technical presentation will revolve around the utilisation of Redis to cope with the massive sign up spikes that occur every 12 weeks. Cloud Servers – cheap, fast & reliable?

By | Company News, General, Technical | One Comment

One of the things the cloud has taught us over the past few years is to expect outages. Lots of them. Many of those outages have been pretty big! This is because in the world of public cloud (aka. Infrastructure as a Service), running servers in reliable, physical data centres has been replaced with a new concept; that of running cloud servers in Availability Zones. Which is fine, so long as you understand the implications and can configure your website or application to operate optimally in this type of environment. Don’t get me wrong, cloud servers have a lot going for them. It’s just that while they solve many problems, they also introduce a few biggies of their own and you really should be across the pros and cons before jumping on the…

Archana – Anchor’s Mama-Bear

By | Company News | No Comments

Archana is a one-woman accounts dynamo. As the only person working full-time on accounts – with occasional assistance from Andrew and Jessica – she has a crucial role at Anchor. She earned her Masters in Professional Accounting from Central Queensland University and plans to start her CPA in the next few years. Like many working mums, Archana manages to juggle her career with spending time with her 7-year-old son. Not always easy when both she and her husband work full-time. With 3 sisters and 2 brothers, family has always been an important part of Archana’s life. She’s still very close with her sisters and travelled extensively with them while she was back in India. In 2009 Archana moved with her son and husband from her native New Delhi in India…
