SSL Certificates

How they work

SSL Certificates provide two functions

1. They secure the data transfer between the computer of a visitor to your website and your website itself allowing them to safely send sensitive information such as passwords or credit card numbers.
2. They give the visitor confidence that the server they’re sending their information to belongs to who they think it does (the website owner).

The first function is achieved by encrypting all of the data transfer. The user can tell that they’re in SSL mode by a) the start of the URL changes from “http://” to “https://” and b) a padlock symbol or similar will appear in their browser.

SSL certificates are digitally signed by trusted organisations, these digital signatures are then installed and configured on the web server that Anchor operates as part of your hosting service.

Types of SSL certificates

Anchor offers 4 different options for SSL certificates: a Thawte/Verisign certificate, a Quick SSL certificate, a self signed certificate, or your have the option of supplying your own, any of which Anchor will install on the server for you.

The certificates vary in terms of the levels of insurance they offer, the branding available for you to place on your website (Eg site seals) and the level of browser support.

A self signed certificate provides the same level of security for data transfer but will show a warning when used. They’re a cost effective option for interfaces which must be secured but are only used internally and not presented to clients/general public.

All certificates offered provide an adequate level of security.

Certificates are available from 1 to 3 years with the exception of self signed which can be provided for longer terms.
