The term application stack (aka a solution or technology stack) is used to describe the various technologies upon which a website or web application has been developed. Typically, it consists of an operating system, database, web server, and programming language (which may use a specific framework – of which there are hundreds). The most famous application stack for internet-facing applications is the well-known LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) upon which the majority of the world’s websites are running.
