How to retrieve full email headers

This page will document the steps to find the full email headers for any received email. Full headers are quite helpful for determining where a message originated from and the path that it took to get from the sender to the receiver.

They are also contact some very helpful information for diagnosing mail delivery problems.

Eudora Message Headers

To view the full headers in Eudora:

1. double click on the message that you wish view the full headers

2. When the message is opened click on the button that says BLAH BLAH BLAH

3. This will display the full email headers at the top of the email

Outlook Express Message Headers

To view the header information in Outlook Express you need to:

1. Open up the message by double clicking on it

2. Now that it is open in its own window click on File

3. scroll down the list and click on Properties

4. Now on the window that has opened up click on the Details tab. This will display the full email headers of the opened message

Outlook 97 Message Headers

With the Internet E-mail service in Outlook 97 version 8.02 or later, or Internet Mail Enhancement Patch or Microsoft Exchange Server service the following steps can be followed:

1. Open any message by double clicking on it

2. Look for Internet headers on the Options tab. If you don't see the Options tab, choose View and then Message Header to display

3. This will provide all the message headers

Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 and 2003 Message Headers

To view the header information in Outlook you need to:

1. Open up the message by double clicking on it. This should open the message in its own Window

2. Click on View then scroll down the list and click on Options

3. At the bottom of the message options box the full message headers will be displayed. The red arrow marks on the image below:

Outlook 2007 Message Headers

1. Right click on the message in the list and select the last entry in the menu that appears, Message Options.

2. At the bottom of the message options box, the full message headers will be displayed.

Mail for OSX Message Headers

To view all of the header information on Mac OS X's Mail application:

1. Click the Mail menu and click Preferences

2. Click Viewing

3. Change Show header detail to All

Outlook Express for Macintosh Message Headers

1. Select the email

2. Click on the View menu

3. Select Source

4. A new window will appear containing the email with full headers
