Server Racks - suppliers in Australia

There is a large variation in the geometry, ease of use and price of server racks available in Australia. Whilst price can be considered up front the factors that effect the day to day use of your racks may not be so apparent until they're installed and you begin to install your kit.

This article outlines some of the factors you may wish to consider when selecting a rack supplier along with a review of some of the Australian suppliers and our experiences with their racks.

Many of the racks available on the market are of a very good quality. Price, availability and delivery options may often prove to be the differentiating factors between manufacturers.

Rack selection guidelines

Rack depth

  • The commonly used rack depths are currently 600, 800, 900, and 1000 mm
  • The deeper the rack you can afford the better. 1000 mm is ideal for most rackmount servers. 900mm should be considered a minimum but beware that deep servers will leave very little available internal space for cabling etc.
  • Additional rack depth ensures adequate space for orderly management of power and network cabling as well as helping to ensure adequate ventilation.

Uniquely keyed locks

  • If racks are being deployed in a shared co-location environment ensure each rack is keyed differently by the supplier.
  • If purchasing a single rack to install in an existing shared space, request a non standard key number to reduce chances of other owners of the same rack type gaining access.

Power rail mounting

  • Power rails can easily obstruct and inhibit the ability to access vertical posts required for mounting of server rails.
  • Pay special consideration to how much the rails protrude in from the rack sides

Ventilation

  • If you intend to have high power consumption in your racks pay special consideration to ventilation to avoid excess heat within the rack.

  • Preferably use ventilated front and rear doors.
  • Consider the capacity to add top mounted fans to help limit heat build up at the top of the racks.

Rack density

  • Whilst not strictly a rack selection criteria, if deploying multiple racks within a data centre take into consideration maximum allowable power consumption per rack. A configuration involving fewer more densely configured racks installed in the same area may prove more cost effective than a larger number of racks that are only partially populated.
