Custom 404 pages
Often when browsing the Internet, one comes across pages that have moved or been deleted. The standard error page is not very helpful! It only tells you that it can't find the page, and gives no clues as to where you might find it. A custom error document is a quick and easy thing to do, to stop people leaving your site before they even see it.
Creating a custom 404 file is easy, just create the page you want in your HTML editor or web designing suite of choice. Then upload it to the web hosting server. Then you need to create a text file called .htaccess (yes, it starts with a dot), with the following line in it:
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomain.com.au/notfound.html
Where http://www.yourdomain.com.au/notfound.html is the full address of your custom error page. Now when anyone goes to a URL that doesn't exist on your domain name, they will see your custom page instead of:
Object not found! The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster. Error 404 anchor.com.au Apache
