Cloud Computing and Cloud Hosting
Cloud is everywhere right now but what does it mean? Is it Amazon’s elastic compute cloud or is it any form of SaaS?
The cloud in the broadest definition seems to relate to any application or data that is stored on the Internet as compared to local computers. In essence this is what web hosting companies have been doing for the last 10-15 years just with a new name.
On the hosting front we’ve seen products from Amazon in the form of EC2, Microsoft’s Windows Azure Cloud and Google apps cloud services.
Australian cloud computing offerings have been a little slower to market but many are now available. In many cases cloud hosting offerings have come in the form of re-branded vps hosting solutions.
Cloud hosting is perhaps generally defined as cloud storage combined with cloud services.
